First Line Fridays – Caught By Surprise

Happy Friday, dear friends!

We’ve got a brand new release for you today & if you haven’t read any of Jen’s books yet, you really must!! In fact, I come as close to insisting as I legally can 😉

Caught By Surprise

by Jen Turano

caught by surprise

 Goodreads | Amazon

And the first line is…

September 1883 – New York City

The first inkling Miss Temperance Flowerdew had that her rather mundane day was about to turn anything but mundane happened when a closed carriage trundled up beside her, keeping pace with her every step as she walked down the sidewalk adjacent to Broadway.

Don’t you just love that heroine’s name? Temperance Flowerdew. I like saying it out loud lol. Jen Turano has the best character names.

Speaking of Jen Turano…

  1. My first line is from Patriot Bride by Kimberley Woodhouse.

Ten-year-old Faith Lytton placed her hands on her hips —like Mama did when she was exasperated— and looked at the sad little group of puny troops allotted to her.

Looking forward to reading Jen’s book! She comes up with the most unique names.

  2. Happy Friday, Carrie! My first line comes from The Trial by Robert Whitlow.

    PROLOGUE
Truth will come to light; murder cannot be hid long.
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, ACT 2, SCENE 2

Celeste Jamison tossed and turned but couldn’t sleep.

  3. Happy Friday! My first line is from Love is Patient by Lila Diller:

“I flipped through the pages of the bridal magazine yet again, from one dogeared page to the next, dreaming and desiring.”

  4. Happy Friday!

I shared the first line of Veronica Roth’s Carve the Mark on my blog today. Here, though, I’ll share the book I’ve just started to read – A Touch of Gold by Annie Sullivan.

“Once upon a time, a little girl helplessly watched as liquid gold spun a web across her tiny frame, racing to wrap her up in an icy cocoon.”

I hope you enjoyed that. Happy weekend and happy reading! 😊

  5. Jen’s book covers are sooo pretty! I really need to read them.

My first line comes from book three in my Cliff Walk Courtships inspirational historical romance series, Treasure of Hope, which releases at the end of October:

“Sarah felt a twinge of guilt at skirting from her maid’s watchful eye, which wasn’t all that sharp this evening.”

  6. I finally found you! I have been wondering who was hosting the First Line Friday!!! Thanks to Book By Book I found you. This book looks great it has some mystery which is the genre that I read in. I hope not to much romance, I’m not one for too much of it!

I will link up in your linky!

My first line Friday is from a book I received in the mail today…
The Fisherman’s Daughter by Melinda Sue Sanchez

The steady slap, slap, slap of my skirt against my shins gave rhythm to my steps as dust landed like a sifted powder on the tips of my leather shoes.

  8. Happy Friday!
The book I shared on my blog this week is Auschwitz Lullaby but it’s also what I just finished reading so I’ll share my favorite quote from the book here: “Sometimes we have to lose everything to find what is most important. When life robs us of what we thought we could not live without and leaves us standing naked before reality, the essential things that had always been invisible take on their true value.” Hope you have a great weekend!

  10. I am so behind with this series. I’ve read the novella and book 1, but time has got away from me!

Over on my blog, I’m showcasing the first line from Carolyn Miller’s new novel, Miss Serena’s Secret. It’s SO good. I’m almost finished with the book, so here I will share the first line chapter 26.

    “I cannot help you.”

A bit blunt and harsh! Lol.
I hope you’re having an awesome weekend filled with great reading time. 😀❤📚
