First Line Fridays — The Esther Paradigm

Hello, reader friends! It’s time for another special edition of First Line Fridays! This week in the United States we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to remember how far we have come, and to recognize how far we still need to press on towards the goal. As a small tribute, we are celebrating diversity with books!

Today’s featured book is one of my top favorites from 2017 and features an American heroine and Bedouin hero. The author crafts a wonderful story and knits together two cultures that often clash. I highly recommend it!

Hannah Pratt stared out across the grainy hills as the wind blew a gentle kiss over the crest. The laughing desert flitted away in a game of tag like she used to play at recess.

  1. That cover is beautiful.

I’m sharing the first line from Mikal Dawn’s Count Me In over on my blog, but I’ll share the first line from a book I just finished and will be reviewing next month:
No Small Storm by Anne Mateer

“Remembrance Wilkins – Mem to her friends and family – shivered, feeling to her bones the coolness of stone walls which never warmed.”

  2. I just finished two books so…..
I am just going to crack open Irene Hannon’s Dangerous Illusions:
“ Hello Matt, long time no see”
As the words slithered through the clammy night air, a jagged shaft of lightening illuminated the speaker’s face for one brief instant.

  3. You know how much I love this book!

I’m sharing the first line from Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” today, in keeping with the diversity theme, but here I’m going to share the first line of “One Plus One Equals Trouble” by Sondra Kraak:

“Killing Edward Stevens was beyond her proper ways. So instead, Claire Montgomery made tea.”

  4. I loved this book so much!

I’m sharing A Letter from Lancaster County by Kate Lloyd on my blog today, but I’m currently reading Isaiah’s Daughter by Mesu Andrews so I’ll share that here.

My friend Yaira said to be brave – but why? Brave or scared, we kept marching. She told me to be a big girl, not to cry, but I’m only five and I’ve seen big men crying.

    Happy Weekend!

  5. This book was so good (one of my top reads of 2017).

I’ll share the first line from the next book on my TBR list: Until We Find Home by Cathy Gohlke: Lightning crackled, splitting the night sky over Paris, illuminating letters painted on the bookstore window across the street: La Maison des Amis des Livre.

    • I highly recommend it! I’m a little bit of a chicken when it comes to Colleen Coble’s books, some of them are pretty intense in the suspense department! Happy reading!

  9. This one is on my list! Just started my own blog, but having more fun reading about everyone else’s most recent reads!

Right now I’m about to start “Judah’s Wife” by Angela Hunt:

“Of the many lessons I learned in my childhood, one made a permanent impression on my soul: god should be feared, and so should my father.”

Can’t wait to read this story about Leah!
